Salawaku – Active Protection through Compassion
Stedelijk museum Amsterdam 2022
I am extremely grateful that the artwork “Salawaku, Active Protection through Compassion” has been given an amazing and almost sacred space in the exhibition “When Things Are Beings” at Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam curated by @amandapinatih and @brittesloothaak
“Salawaku, Active Protection through Compassion is a contemporary interpretation that highlights the power of the Salawaku, a narrow shield originating at the Maluku islands. The front of the shield is usually painted or inlaid with small pieces of shell in a pattern of personal significance to the owner or to their family’s social status or clan. Some salawaku’s also provide spiritual protection, security and prosperity.
In this work Hatutamelen has simplified the front of the Salawaku shield to accentuate its invisible forces rather than its physical strength. The mother-of-pearl inlaid sun represents light shining towards the viewer. The forces emanating from the surface are intended to counteract ill intent, transforming it into gentleness and compassion and preventing any need for conflict.
The woodcarvings on the back of the shield represent knowledge and power. The exact meaning of the symbols in the design is known only to the owner. By hiding them from direct view, Hatutamelen reminds the viewer that bearers of indigenous knowledge owe no explanation to outsiders.”
